Though Nathaniel Greene grew up in the pacifist religion of the Friends, he became fascinated with military affairs as a young man. Lacking much schooling, he set himself to learn the art of warfare on his own. An accident as a boy had left him with a limp and the local militia would not accept him as an officer, even though most of the men considered him exceptional.
Still, he joined, content to serve as a lowly private just as long as he could strike a blow for freedom. Despite his limp, he soon made his ability known and he rose quickly to the rank of general in the Continental Army. Brilliant and courageous in battle, Greene took over the battered American army in the south and turned the tables on British General Cornwallis. George Washington stated that if he were disabled, Greene would be his choice to take his place. Here is the true and exciting story of one of the greatest generals of America’s struggle for freedom.
